Sometimes financial planning conversations can go places one might not expect. Take for example the following inspiring story of one business owner's dream to live in California.
I get an email asking if I would be willing to meet and discuss financial planning issues. I replied by saying--"Don't you work with another CFP(r)?" To which she replied--"I'm not working with her anymore and I have been working with another CFP(r) guy but they don't really do what you do."
Anyway we agreed to meet and see where it goes. Well in a little over an hour
we managed to get into a rich discussion regarding the current circumstances and in the last 15 minutes or so got to the--"What I would REALLY like to do is..."--part.
That is where we started letting string out on the kite and in no time had the makings of a plan based upon the information and awareness at hand. She had specific checkpoints for follow up but more importantly gained perspective from the higher vantage point clarity from a conversation based upon her Financial Planning needs and wants instead of just another product solution like she had received from her two previous CFP(r)'s. She used words like--EXCITING and WARP SPEED to describe her thought process.
The conclusion was to defer making the BIG change now and to put herself into a position to do so later if things go as well as expected. Either way her understanding of the total picture allowed her to feel empowered to dream AND be conscious that even a kite requires a string to fly.
